Blue Flag Beaches

41 beaches and marinas in Wales met criteria to fly the coveted international Blue Flag. 2 of these are local to Picket Pods Campsite. These are Penarth Marina and Whitmore Bay, Barry Island (Number 10 below).

Beaches were judged against 30 criteria, including:

  • highest water quality
  • litter management
  • easy to read information
  • dog control
  • sustainable environmental ethics

Marinas met 16 land-based criteria including:

  • adequate waste reception facilities
  • provision of lifesaving equipment
  • commitment to respect
  • safeguarding local environment

1. Ogmore-by-Sea

Postcode: CF32 0QP

  • A wide sand and pebble beach. Access dependent on the tide level of the Ogmore river.
  • Parking, toilets and refreshments (seasonal) available.
  • Dogs welcome all year round.

Great for: Walks that will put colour in your cheeks, and exploring the nearby Merthyr Mawr sand dunes.

 

2. Dunraven Bay, Southerndown

Postcode: CF32 0RP

  • Depending on the tide, at most times it’s a sand and pebble bay which is connected to the Wales Coast Path.
  • Parking, toilets and refreshments (seasonal) available. Dogs banned between 1 May – 30 September.
  • Lifeguards on duty during summer season.

Great for: Surfing, kayaking and rock pooling with little ones.

 

3. Nash Point, Marcross

Postcode: CF61 1ZH

  • A rocky shore and rugged cliff scenery.
  • Guided tours are available at nearby Nash Point lighthouse.
  • Parking and refreshments available.
  • Dogs welcome all year round.

Great for: Spectacular rock formations and views.

 

4. Cwm Colhugh, Llantwit Major

  • Rock pools and sand with cliff top scenery.
  • Parking, toilets and refreshments available.
  • Dogs banned between 1 May and 30 September.
  • Lifeguards on duty during summer season.

Great for: Surfing and coastal walks all year round. The Wales Coast Path joins up with the beach and offers some amazing walks and views.

 

5. Summerhouse Point, Boverton

  • A flat rock beach on a quiet part of the coast.
  • Parking and toilets (at certain times) available.

Great for: Walkers, ramblers and fishermen.

 

6. The Leys, Aberthaw

Postcode: CF62 1UB

  • Very rocky, next to Aberthaw Power Station.
  • Parking available.
  • Dogs welcome all year round.

Great for: One of the best shore angling venues in South Wales.

 

7.Fontygary Bay, Rhoose

Postcode: CF62 3ZT

  • A sheltered beach backed by cliffs. A mixture of sand, pebbles and rock pools.
  • Dogs welcome all year round.

Great for: Getting away from it all.

 

8. Porthkerry, Barry

Postcode: CF62 3BY

  • A wide pebble beach adjoining Porthkerry Country Park.
  • Parking, toilets and refreshments available.

Great for: The combination of a beach and country park. Includes an adventure playground and nature trails.

 

9. Cold Knap, Barry

Postcode: CF62 6TA

  • A wide pebble beach with coastal walks nearby.
  • Parking available.
  • Dogs banned between 1 May and 30 September.
  • 9

Great for: Windsurfing and sea fishing. The conditions and location are perfect for both.

 

10. Whitmore Bay, Barry Island

Postcode: CF62 5TR

  • A wide sandy Blue Flag beach close to cafes, attractions and amusement arcades.
  • Parking, toilets and refreshments available.
  • Dogs banned between 1 May and 30 September.
  • Lifeguards on duty during summer season.

Great for: Traditional seaside fun, fish and chips, ice cream, sandcastles and sunbathing. Beach wheelchairs available for hire during the summer from the Tourist Information Centre.

 

11. Jackson’s Bay, Barry Island

  • A small sandy bay with a footpath linking around to Whitmore Bay.
  • Dogs welcome all year round.

Great for: A quieter alternative to Whitmore Bay, with coastal walks.

 

12. Lavernock Point, near Penarth

Postcode: CF64 5XQ

  • A small sandy beach with coastal walks nearby.
  • Parking and refreshments available.
  • Dogs welcome all year round.

Great for: History – it was from here that Marconi received the first radio transmission across water in 1897.

 

13. Penarth Seafront

Postcode: CF64 3AU

  • Steps lead down from the esplanade to the beach, which is a mix of stone and shingle.
  • Parking, toilets and refreshments available.
  • Dogs banned between 1 May and 30 September.

Great for: Sea fishing and the Pier, beautiful gardens and range of places to eat and drink.
